As part of the efforts to sanitize drug distribution in Nigeria, the PCN has approved during its 36th Council meeting in May 2014, giving preference for licensed pharmacy technicians to operate PPMV outlets/shops. Separation of prescribing and dispensing, also called dispensing separation, is a practice in medicine and pharmacy in which the physician who provides a medical prescription is independent from the pharmacist who provides the prescription drug. In the US, pharmacy technicians perform their duties under the supervision of pharmacists. Although they may perform, under supervision, most dispensing, compounding and other tasks, they are not generally allowed to perform the role of counseling patients on the proper use of their medications. Some states have a legally mandated pharmacist-to-pharmacy technician ratio. The boundaries between these disciplines and with other sciences, such as biochemistry, are not always clear-cut.

At the June 28, 2018
Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy (Board) Meeting, the Board voted to waive
the requirement that Pharm.D. Graduates of schools of pharmacy accredited by
the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) earn at least 500
intern hours outside of their academic program. This means that the 1,500
intern hours required for licensure as a pharmacist may be earned through an
ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy’s Pharm.D. Program and these graduates are
no longer required to earn 500 intern hours outside of the school’s academic
program. Vazquez is one of eight Camden high school students selected in their junior year to be part of the district’s first pharmacy technician program.
