Other medical specialties may employ surgical procedures, such as ophthalmology and dermatology, but are not considered surgical sub-specialties per se. One common trigger is frustration when a child cannot get what he or she wants or is asked to do something that he or she might not feel like doing. For children, anger issues often accompany other mental health conditions, including ADHD, autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder,  and Tourette’s syndrome. It’s not unusual for a child younger than 4 to have as many as nine tantrums per week. These can feature episodes of crying, kicking, stomping, hitting and pushing that last five to 10 minutes, says Denis Sukhodolsky, PhD, a clinical psychologist with Yale Medicine Child Study Center. Machine learning models could be used to observe the vital signs of patients receiving critical care and alert clinicians if certain risk factors increase. While medical devices like heart monitors can track vital signs, AI can collect the data from those devices and look for more complex conditions, such as sepsis. One IBM client has developed a predictive AI model for premature babies that is 75% accurate in detecting severe sepsis. Data for the study was gathered from a period between January and July 2022, when previous strains of Omicron were circulating. Another treatment, remdesivir, is also expected to be effective against Omicron.

Professor Ennis co-supervises a PhD studentship investigating methods to detect novel chromosomal fusion events that lead to cancer. She collaborates with clinical geneticists expert in the process of splicing to identify protein isoforms that are alternatively expressed in breast cancers. Prof. Ennis’ group comprises senior postdoctoral researchers, clinical research staff and senior research nurses. She supervises a diverse group of MSc and PhD students as well as undergraduate student projects.
