Regenerative Medicine: Harnessing the Power of Stem Cells for Healing

Professor Glennie was appointed a personal chair in 1999 and was Head of the Cancer Sciences Unit from 2005 to 2015. Having graduated from the University of Southampton in 1977, he embarked on a PhD with Profs Freda and George Stevenson investigating the therapeutic application of antibodies to the treatment of cancer. He was one of the first to undertake antibody engineering and to show that structural changes, such as reducing antibody valency, could have profound benefits on therapeutic efficacy.

SE holds an honorary NHS contract, works closely with clinical colleagues across various NHS Trusts. She is Chief Investigator of NIHR portfolio research recruiting thousands of patients and families into clinical research. The group is a member of the MRC/ ABPI COPD initiative, COPDMAP, to develop a stratified approach to COPD (targeting the right treatments to the right people), enabling effective clinical trials as well as identifying novel biomarkers, mechanisms and targets. The first cohort, who graduated in 2008, are now established within their specialist training for medicine, surgery or general practice.

Will Omicron be the last variant?

She lectures in Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology and Genomics within the BM5 Medical Degree Programme and Module Lead within the MSc in Genomic Medicine. A particular strength of the Respiratory and Allergy Group is the close links between paediatric and adult research in the lung, providing a distinctive life-course perspective of disease development and progression. As junior doctors, BM6 graduates are being successful in gaining training places for a range of specialities, many staying local to Southampton or returning to their home areas. HEFCE, the Department of Health and other interested organisations such as the BMA and the Council of Heads of Medical Schools (CHMS) have indicated the need to reduce the under-representation of poorer socioeconomic groups in medical schools. The school hosts the largest enterprise contract for the University, as an NIHR Coordinating Centre, managing national and international research funding programmes. Our research is multi-disciplinary and broad, delivering high quality, evidence-based health research to enhance prevention, early detection and management of health-related conditions.

For example, some argue that the principles of autonomy and beneficence clash when patients refuse blood transfusions, considering them life-saving; and truth-telling was not emphasized to a large extent before the HIV era. In 2010, Professor Ennis initiated local research into the genetics of paediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Patient and family recruitment is ongoing in collaboration with colleagues from Southampton University Hospital Trust and the NIHR Nutrition Biomedical Research Centre. This locally collected cohort of patients contributes to the UK & Ireland Paediatric IBD Genetics Group, as part of the UKIBDGC and is part of our current next generation sequencing work.

There’s less waiting, more access, longer visits and greater coordination of care. However, the fees can be high, and if you don’t have complex medical needs, it may not feel worth the expense. It has been an emotional time marked by startling daily counts of new cases and deaths that multiplied rapidly. More than 100 million people around the world have been infected by COVID-19 and more than 2.5 million people have died of the disease. Many of us mourned loved ones in the last year, and the grief, along with isolation to prevent infections, took a toll on our mental health. Burgeoning caseloads overwhelmed hospitals, while health care workers became heroes, putting in long, harrowing hours, often (in those early days) without sufficient supplies, to care for patients with COVID-19.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink Says Brain-to-Computer Interface Has FDA Approval for Clinical Trial

The announcement followed a rising sense of alarm in the preceding months over a new, potentially lethal virus that was swiftly spreading around the world. A year later, we look back on one of the most challenging periods in recent memory. The Betsy Winters House Staff Award is presented annually to two members of the Yale-New Haven Medical Center house staff who, as excellent educators and role models, have made the most significant contribution to medical student education. Unfortunately, herbal supplements can be sold without being proven to be safe or effective. But studies show chiropractic can also be helpful for a number of other ailments, like headaches, neck pain, joint problems in your upper and lower body, and disorders caused by whiplash.

In addition the group works close with colleagues is mathematical modelling and machine learning to develop methods for the integration of diverse data types in healthcare research. As science and technology developed, medicine became more reliant upon medications. It typically involves entry level education at a university medical school, followed by a period of supervised practice or internship, or residency. A variety of teaching methods have been employed in medical education, still itself a focus of active research.

At this point, there is little doubt that AI will become a core part of the digital health systems that shape and support modern medicine. But it can be a game changer for patients with chronic illnesses who would benefit from the higher level of care. And for people who are frustrated by the conventional medical system, concierge care offers an alternative.

The definition changes as doctors test and move more of them into the mainstream. The CDC says the presence of severity of symptoms can be affected by vaccination, history of prior infection, and age and other health conditions. In early 2023, a new Omicron subvariant called XBB.1.5,  the most transmissible strain of the virus so far, was predominant in the U.S. Cases were also believed to be rising with people spending more time in doors and attending recent holiday gatherings, with fewer wearing masks and taking other mitigation measures. Experts are still trying to better understand XBB.1.5 and other Omicron subvariants, such as BQ 1.1., which continue to circulate. They are also monitoring more than 300 other descendants of Omicron around the world.

What is concierge medicine?

Only those patients who require special attention either for diagnosis or treatment should reach the second (advisory) or third (specialized treatment) tiers where the cost per item of service becomes increasingly higher. The first level represents primary health care, or first contact care, at which patients have their initial contact with the health-care system. The scope and sciences underpinning human medicine overlap many other fields.

By strengthening and increasing these links, our Triple Helix approach will achieve greater impact and accelerate new ways to tackle the world’s most complex problems. The school incorporates the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre and is closely linked with the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre. We aim to foster high quality cancer research with an emphasis on translating theory into viable clinical applications.

Modern medical care also depends on information – still delivered in many health care settings on paper records, but increasingly nowadays by electronic means. Medicine® is an open access publication, providing authors with continuous publication of original research across a broad spectrum of medical scientific disciplines and sub-specialties. The Medicine® review process emphasizes the scientific, technical and ethical validity of submissions. Novelty or potential for impact are not considered during the manuscript’s evaluation or adjudication. Whether the goal is accomplishing chores or getting to school on time, the approach is the same.
