Sports Medicine: Healing and Supporting Athletes’ Health

We work with both commercial and non-commercial partners to stay at the forefront of research, and many of our researchers work in the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre. Insights gained from our work are now underpinning novel treatments, gene therapies and stem cell research. We are an ambitious community with a reputation for our expertise in both research and teaching. Medicine at Southampton leads learning and discovery across the lifecourse, from before birth to the elderly, through a range of specialisms.

This practice focuses on the body’s structure — mainly the spine –and how it functions. A trained professional called a chiropractor uses different techniques to adjust (“manipulate”) your spine or other parts of your body so that they’re in proper form, or alignment. This MRC funded CASE studentship aims to understanding the role of FcγR in immunotherapy for neurodegenerative diseases. The Respiratory and Allergy Group within the Faculty of Medicine works at the interface between laboratory and clinical science to define mechanisms of respiratory disease and translating these findings into novel therapies real world clinical impact. Since its inception the BM6 has received national recognition as an example of good practice of an innovative widening access programme.

Immunostimulatory monoclonal antibodies became newsworthy when the drug ipilimumab proved effective against metastatic melanoma and was approved for patients by the Food and Drug Administration. They have gone on to develop an engineered anti-CD40 monoclonal antibody (ChiLob7-4), which has now completed phase I trials. It appears that these reagents work primarily by binding to CD40 on antigen presenting cells such as dendritic cells, but probably also B cells, and activating them to a level that allows the generation of effective tumour-specific T cells. Often this is achieved without the need for T-cell help, allowing responses in the absence of the rare helper epitopes. Dr White, also part of the Southampton team, has recently shown a critical role for FcγRIIb as a promoter of the agonistic activity of certain anti-CD40 mAb.

Spanish doctor Santiago Ramón y Cajal is considered the father of modern neuroscience. Veterinary medicine was, for the first time, truly separated from human medicine in 1761, when the French veterinarian Claude Bourgelat founded the world’s first veterinary school in Lyon, France. The major shift in medical thinking was the gradual rejection, especially during the Black Death in the 14th and 15th centuries, of what may be called the “traditional authority” approach to science and medicine. Physicians like Vesalius improved upon or disproved some of the theories from the past.

Values such as these do not give answers as to how to handle a particular situation, but provide a useful framework for understanding conflicts. When moral values are in conflict, the result may be an ethical dilemma or crisis. Sometimes, no good solution to a dilemma in medical ethics exists, and occasionally, the values of the medical community (i.e., the hospital and its staff) conflict with the values of the individual patient, family, or larger non-medical community. Conflicts can also arise between health care providers, or among family members.

Our researchers are driven by a desire to create better treatments and diagnostics for their patients, specialising in world-leading patient-focused translational research. We’ve conducted many clinical trials, including being a leading centre for the COVID vaccine trials. Modern scientific biomedical research (where results are testable and reproducible) began to replace early Western traditions based on herbalism, the Greek “four humours” and other such pre-modern notions.
